The Buffalo Bills have released quarterback Trent Edwards on Monday.
According to multiple reports over the weekend, the Bills had been looking for a team that would be interested in trading for Edwards. Two NFL executives told ESPN on Monday that they expect a team to claim Edwards off waivers by Wednesday.
"He gave us everything he had," Bills coach Chan Gailey said of Edwards. "We just felt like were not going to go back that direction at the next juncture."
Ryan Fitzpatrick started the Bills' Week 3 game at New England, a 38-30 loss to the Patriots. Brian Brohm is the other quarterback on the roster as the Bills (0-3) prepare to host the New York Jets on Sunday.
"After the way Fitz played yesterday I feel very confident about the direction we’re going," Gailey said. "I think we want to look at Brian as our next option. That was the change."
Fitzpatrick expressed surprise at the move. "I think it caught everybody off-guard," he said. "Trent's a well-respected and well-liked guy in the locker room.
"Personally for me, this one's tough because we spent so much time together. He'll rebound and move on from this. And we've got to move forward."
Edwards did not speak with the media Monday.
In his short career with Buffalo — spanning three full seasons and two games this year — Edwards appeared in 34 games making 32 starts.
